Promoting from the app is easy and fast, but limited. Once you are serious about advertising, you will need the ads platform on the website — which opens options the app does not have.
This part covers the difference between them, and how to build a campaign properly from the website.
Why is the platform better?
- More and more precise objectives, including conversions on your own site.
- Advanced targeting. Interests, behaviours, and custom and lookalike audiences.
- Retargeting. Reaching people who engaged with you or visited your site before.
- Control over scheduling and budget. Specific times, and different distribution.
- Detailed reporting. You can compare ads and audiences against each other.
The structure of a campaign
Every campaign has three levels, and understanding them makes everything else easier:
- The campaign: where you set the overall objective (awareness, visits, messages, or conversions).
- The ad group: where the audience, budget, schedule and placements live.
- The ad: the video itself, the text and the action button.
That structure means you can test the same video with two different audiences, or one audience with two videos — and know which made the difference.
The objective determines everything
If your objective is conversions on your website, you will need to install the tracking code on the site first. Without it the platform cannot optimise the campaign or tell you the result.
And if your objective is messages, make sure someone will reply. An objective with no readiness behind it wastes the whole budget.
Custom audiences
This is the strongest feature on the platform. You can build an audience from people who watched your videos, engaged with your account, visited your site, or a customer list you hold.
Those people already know you, so the cost of convincing them is far lower. Start with them before going to a cold audience.
And from those audiences you can create a lookalike audience — people resembling your existing customers. One of the best ways to expand without guessing at targeting.
Budget and distribution
Start with a modest daily budget per group, and let the campaign run for at least three days before any adjustment.
Constant adjustment prevents the platform learning. The rule: at most one adjustment every three days, and one change at a time so you know the cause.
Creative is the biggest variable
On TikTok specifically, the video itself matters more than the targeting. The same audience with two different videos can produce several times the difference in cost.
So keep more than one creative running at all times, and refresh them periodically. A video tires after a while (people see it too often and stop engaging), and refreshing restores performance.
Make your ad look like content
The best-performing ads on the platform are the ones that look like ordinary content: shot on a phone, in a natural voice, without glossy production.
An ad that looks like a television commercial gets skipped instantly. That is not an opinion, it is what the numbers say in every account I have worked on.
Read the reports properly
Focus on the numbers tied to your money: cost per result, number of results, and return if you can measure it.
The other numbers — impressions and views — are useful for diagnosis but are not the goal. A campaign with a million views and a high cost per message is a failed campaign however big the number looks.
Stop quickly, scale slowly
If a group performs badly after a fair period, stop it without hesitation. If a group performs well, scale it gradually rather than all at once.
Suddenly doubling the budget usually raises the cost, because the platform has to reach a wider audience quickly.
The customer journey in advertising
Companies achieving the best results do not run one campaign, they run three in sequence:
- An awareness campaign to a broad audience, aiming for many people to see your content.
- A retargeting campaign to people who watched or engaged, aiming to build trust.
- An offer campaign to people close to deciding, containing the offer and the next step.
That split lowers the total cost considerably, because you are not asking for a decision from people who have just seen you for the first time.
Do not lose the basics among the options
The platform has many options that can lose you in detail. But in the end three things determine the result: the video, the offer, and the place you send people to.
If those three are weak, no advanced setup rescues the campaign. If they are strong, even a simple setup produces a result.
Record your results
Keep a simple file for every campaign: the video, the audience, the budget, the cost and the result. After ten campaigns you will have a knowledge library specific to your business.
That library is worth more than any course, because it is built on your market and your customers — and platforms change while those lessons remain.
In short
The ads platform gives you real control: precise objectives, custom and lookalike audiences, retargeting, and detailed reporting.
Understand the campaign structure, start with people who already know you, make creative your priority, adjust slowly, and measure by cost per result rather than by views.
This is the sixth and final part of the TikTok marketing and advertising course.
