TikTok course — Part five: advertising from inside the app

Once you have content that works, the next step is reaching more people than those already interested. That is what advertising does.

And the easiest way to start: from inside the app on your phone. You pick an existing video, set a budget and a duration, and the platform delivers it to more people.

Start with a video that has proved itself

The most important rule in TikTok advertising: do not build an ad from a new video. Pick one you posted that performed well organically.

Organic performance is evidence the content genuinely stops people. When you put money behind it, you are scaling something that works rather than betting on something untested.

The steps to promote from the app

  • Open the video from your account and choose the promote option.
  • Choose the campaign goal: profile visits, website visits, or messages.
  • Define the audience — automatic or manual (age, gender, interests, location).
  • Set the daily budget and the duration.
  • Review and start, then wait for the short review process.

Choose the right goal

The goal determines who the platform reaches. If you choose views, it reaches people who watch a lot. If you choose messages, it reaches people who send messages.

Most companies choose views because it makes the number look good, and then wonder why there is no result. Choose the goal you actually want even if it costs more.

Budget: start small

Do not start with a large budget. Begin with a modest daily amount for three to five days and see the result.

The numbers to watch: cost per result (what you paid for a visit or a message), completion rate, and engagement. If the cost is reasonable against the value of a customer to you, increase gradually.

Gradual matters: raise by a sensible percentage every couple of days rather than doubling suddenly, so performance does not swing.

The audience: automatic is not always bad

TikTok relies on the content to determine the audience more than other platforms do. Automatic targeting works well in many cases, especially if your product is general.

Manual targeting helps when you need a specific location (a local service) or a specific age. Do not narrow too much at the start, because over-narrowing raises cost and reduces learning.

Test more than one video

Do not put your whole budget behind one video. Try two or three with small budgets, then concentrate on the best performer.

The difference between one video and another in the same campaign can be several times over. That saves you more money than any adjustment to targeting.

Send people somewhere ready

If the ad directs people to messages, someone has to reply quickly. If it directs them to a website, that site has to be fast, clear and work on a phone.

The biggest source of wasted ad spend is the destination not being ready. Fix that before you pay.

Do not expect an instant result

In the first day or two the platform is learning. Judging a campaign before three days have passed makes you stop things that could have worked.

At the same time, if five days pass with a cost far above the value of a customer, do not continue on hope. Change the video or the goal.

The difference between promoting and a campaign

Promoting from the app is a quick, suitable start, but it is limited: fewer goals, simpler targeting, and abbreviated reporting.

Use it in two cases: to test an idea quickly, or when you have a video performing excellently and want to scale it immediately. But if advertising is going to be a permanent part of your work, the full platform is the right place.

Common mistakes in a first ad

  • Choosing a views objective and expecting sales. The platform reaches people suited to exactly the goal you chose.
  • Stopping the campaign after a day. The platform is still learning, and first-day numbers mislead.
  • Changing everything at once. Then you will not know what made the difference.
  • Not knowing the value of a customer. Without it you cannot judge whether the cost is high or reasonable.

Work out the value of a customer before you pay

Before any advertising, know: how much net profit does a customer bring you? And how many times do they buy?

If a customer brings you a hundred pounds of profit, and one in every five messages becomes a customer, then a message is worth up to about twenty pounds. That number is your ceiling, and it lets you decide by calculation rather than by feel.

Advertising is not a substitute for content

Companies working only through advertising pay the highest cost, because they buy every single view. Companies with content that works get free reach and use advertising to amplify it.

Make it a rule: content first, advertising as a multiplier. Not the other way round.

In short

You can start TikTok advertising from your phone in minutes: pick a video that has proved itself, choose the real goal, start with a small budget, test more than one video, and make sure the destination is ready.
