Email marketing funnel — Part one: building the list

The email marketing funnel has three stages: you collect, you build a relationship, and you convert. This part is about the first — the foundation on which everything else stands or falls.

Why is the list your most important marketing asset?

Because it is the only thing you genuinely own. Followers belong to the platform, your Google ranking belongs to Google, but the list stays with you whatever happens.

And that is not theory: many companies have lost their accounts and been able to continue because they had a list, while others disappeared because their entire relationship with their customers lived on one platform.

People do not give their email for nothing

"Subscribe to our newsletter" used to be enough. Now nobody cares, because everyone's inbox is crowded.

You have to give something with clear, immediate value. And that value has to relate to your product rather than to anything generic.

Things that work

  • A short practical guide solving a specific problem for your customer.
  • A checklist to use before buying or starting.
  • A ready template that saves them time.
  • A discount or an offer on a first order — this works well for stores.
  • An alert about a product becoming available or bookings opening.

The rule: what you give has to be useful enough that people would have paid for it.

Keep signing up simple

Ask for the email only, or the email and a name at most. Every extra field noticeably reduces sign-ups.

And put the form where people actually reach it: in the middle of your content, at the end of important pages, and in your bio.

Say what they will receive

State clearly: what will arrive, how often, and how to unsubscribe.

That clarity reduces sign-ups slightly and raises their quality considerably. People who know what they are joining stay and engage.

Forgotten sources of a list

Most companies have scattered, unused emails: old invoices, customer messages, bookings, and event attendees.

Collect them in one place — provided those people genuinely dealt with you and would expect to hear from you. And send a first message explaining why you are in touch.

Do not buy lists

Ready-made lists harm you directly: zero open rates, spam complaints, and a deteriorating sender reputation — after which even your messages to interested people stop arriving.

A small, cleanly built list is far stronger than a large purchased one.

Start today however small

A hundred emails from genuinely interested people are worth more than ten thousand random followers.

And the most important thing is to start now, because a list grows by accumulation — every month you delay costs you additions that would have amounted to a respectable number a year from now.

In short

The list is the only asset you own. Offer something of real value in exchange for the email, keep sign-up simple and clear, gather the sources you already have, and never buy lists.

This is part one of the email funnel series — part two covers building the relationship after sign-up.
