How to start in digital marketing — Part one: understand the field

If you have decided to enter digital marketing, the first mistake you can make is starting with a course before understanding what the field consists of.

Part one of this series is about the big picture: what happens in the field, what the paths are, and which one suits you.

Digital marketing is not one job

The name describes a wide field containing completely different specialisms in the skills required. Someone running ads has a different day from someone writing content, which is different again from someone analysing data.

That confusion is why many people get frustrated: they enter the field, find themselves learning unrelated things, and feel they are not progressing.

The main paths

  • The performance path. Advertising, analysis and measurement. Needs logic and numbers.
  • The content path. Writing, filming, editing and social media. Needs taste and ideas.
  • The search path. SEO and content people search for. Needs patience and attention to detail.
  • The client relationship path. Account management and coordination. Needs communication and organisation.
  • The automation path. Email, tools and customer journeys. Needs structured thinking.

How do you know which path suits you?

Do not choose on salary or on what people say is in demand. Choose on the nature of the daily work.

Ask yourself: do you enjoy sitting with numbers and analysing? Or producing ideas and executing them? Or dealing with people and coordinating? The answer determines your path better than any test.

What does marketing work actually look like?

There is a common impression that this work is all creativity and ideas. In reality a large share of it is repetitive execution: tracking numbers, small adjustments, reports, and responding to feedback.

That is not a flaw, but it is important to know from the start so you are not surprised. Creativity exists, but it is a small share within organised work.

What does the field need besides tools?

  • Understanding business. How a company makes money and who its customer is.
  • Clear writing. Half the field is writing, even in the technical specialisms.
  • Comfort with numbers. Not advanced mathematics, but ease with simple calculations.
  • Patience and discipline. Results take time and the work needs regularity.

The first thirty days

Do not enrol in anything yet. Give a month to two things: reading about the field generally, and speaking to three or four people who work in it.

Those conversations matter more than any course at the start. Ask them: what does your day look like? What is the hardest part? And what do you wish you had known before starting?

In short

Digital marketing is a field with different paths, and the first step is not a course — it is understanding the paths and seeing which suits you.

Take a month to read and speak to people who work in it, then choose one path. That choice will save you a year of scattered effort.

This is part one — part two covers building your foundation in the path you chose.
